Satchel’s Last Resort is a local animal shelter dedicated to providing a home for dogs that need a little extra care and attention. These dogs often live their lives out at Satchel’s, so the design began with the concept of ‘home.’

After numerous iterations and discussions about the most appropriate way to provide the most loving and caring atmosphere, a courtyard layout surrounded by 3 buildings and an outdoor plaza made the most sense.

The plaza footprint keeps the current dog shelter location but reimagines its use. One building houses multi-use spaces for maximum and efficient use, while the 2nd and 3rd building house the dogs and cats respectively. All buildings are PEMBs (Pre-engineered metal buildings) for cost efficiency but for also design purposes, reinventing them from the stereotypical industrial look to a residential aesthetic.

The 11 acres allows for outdoor dog runs and maximum play time for both the dogs and the 80+ volunteers that are so integral to the success of the organization.
